Robert Gwathmey

This week, I wandered into a bookstore and came across The Life and Art of a Passionate Observer written by Michael Kammen, which featured the two paintings above. Gwathmey was an eighth-generation Virginian of Welsh heritage. He is remembered as the first white American painter to depict African Americans in an unromanticized, yet respectful manner.

I'm really looking forward to an enlightening read. I am particularly interested in getting a peek into the mind of Gwathmey, a man who was under FBI surveillance due to his activism and involvement in the civil rights movement. Thinking about this reminds me that art is not just about the theory, but also about the people conveying messages through them.

Evan Brown

Evan Brown was a notorious student. He was always late for class and was just returning from a suspension. The class had a science test on Monday at 8:30 am and Evan had to be creative with this appearance.

Doodle Journal: #1

Inspired by my cousin to doodle more often, I put my pen to paper to see what I could do last night. Starting off was a challenge, but letting my imagination guide me was the key and I love the result. I'm looking forward to more doodling. It's a great exercise in freeing your creativity from self-imposed rules.

Ebo Taylor - Love and Death

Taylor became a major figure in Ghanaian highlife during the 1950s and '60s. Through the mid-'70s and into the '80s, Taylor recorded a number of solo projects, exploring unique fusions and borrowing elements from traditional Ghanaian sounds, Fela's Afrobeat, jazz, soul and funk. Now 74 years-old, Ebo Taylor's music has become increasingly in-demand with a series of Ghanaian compilations on Soundway Records and Analog Africa. Love and Death is one favourite from this album. I especially love the hints of jazz elements in the song.

The video below features highlights from the evening.

Some People with Signs by Frank Plant

The idea behind this project stems from the excitement of people demonstrating something they feel strongly about, which can be positive or negative, and usually requires a sign to represent the subject. The sharp contrast between the dark metal figures and the colourful signs creates an interesting focus on the signs and a secondary focus on the people depicted.
